"In 2004 I edited and released the film ‘Kinky Gerlinky’, portraying one virtual night at the club. This was gleaned from 21 episodes of the club, previously edited and released on VHS between 1990 and 1993; these record the evolution of the club and its revellers, the music, fashion and politics via the development of the camera’s relationship with a regular crowd gathering over that period of three years.
Prior to documenting Kinky Gerlinky, I had been documenting the development and evolution of dancing in several clubs. I was aware that being in a club pointing a camera and a light changes your initial relationship with the clubbers but the relationship develops, through then sharing the footage back with them. Ironically it's not until the final episode that we start the story from the dance floor, as all the other episodes start with the procedures of entering the club, though every episode also contains aspects of reactions and leaving at the end of the night.
Maybe start with an episode from around the middle of the series to get a sense of a night, and if you enjoy that you might consider watching from Episode 1. From Episode 8 onwards I have a second camera with my friend Luke behind the lens, and on subsequent nights sometimes a third. I particularly loved how this enabled me to get a better flow with movement on the dance floor, as with all my dance editing it’s important to me that it always maintains accurate sync to the music."
